University of Alabama Marine Sciences Internship. During the summer CCV hosts to two of ‘Bama’s best and brightest. Selected students participate in coral reef health surveys, water quality analysis and marine life observations.
The interns live in staff housing at CCV. They dive on the boats with guests and on their own in the front yard. They participate in the daily operations of the resort. All of the past participants have left with deeper understanding of reef ecosystems, resort management, and Roatan island life.
A note from Dr. Julie Olson, Professor
Department of Biological Sciences
University of Alabama
“The development of the Marine Science Internship at CoCo View Resort has created a fantastic opportunity for University of Alabama undergraduate students to get first-hand field research experience.
During the six-week program the students gain skills in identifying marine organisms, including fish, corals (hard and soft), sponges, algae, and performing water quality measurements.
They share their knowledge with resort guests, formally during two evening presentations each week and informally through conversations during meals or at the dive lockers.
As the internship is now in its fifth year, I have been impressed with the change in the students’ demeanors after the experience. In addition to the science learned from active participation in the research process, they come back to UA much more confident about their area of study, excited about future research opportunities in graduate or professional school, and passionate about marine conservation.
The CCV experience adds a component to their undergraduate education that could not otherwise be gained and provides the opportunity to become a part of the CCV family. The skills learned at CCV, both in science and in social interactions, continue to serve our previous interns extremely well and have helped to shape their career plans. I, and the University of Alabama, am thrilled to offer this wonderful experience to our students and greatly appreciate the generous support of CCV for this program.”
